Liposuction: Is It Right For You?

Have you recently lost weight only to find that a few stubborn pounds just refuse to go? If so, you should consider liposuction. Commonly referred to as “lipo”, is a procedure that aims to remove excess fat deposits from problem areas like the legs, abdomen, upper arms, and face.
Although most patients achieve great results with lipo, it isn’t right for everyone. Here’s how you can know if this procedure is right for you:

It’s Not A Weight Loss Procedure
Lipo removes small deposits of fat, rarely more than a few pounds. This is great for those who have stubborn fat deposits on their arms, tummy, or thighs, but it’s not going to work for those who are overweight and looking to become thin. Good candidates for liposuction are generally at or near their ideal weight already.

It Doesn’t Remove Excess Skin
Liposuction can remove stubborn fat deposits, but it won’t do anything about the excess skin that sometimes comes with weight loss. For that reason, it’s sometimes performed in conjunction with another procedure to remove skin. Unless you’re prepared to do this, you should have tight, firm skin going into the procedure.

It’s Not Completely Permanent
Although you are less likely to gain weight in the areas where you’ve had lipo, it’s still possible to gain weight and end up with fat in these same areas. For that reason, it’s recommended that you are already living a healthy lifestyle before you undergo liposuction.

You’ll Have To Take Some Time Off
Although the recovery period for lipo is mild compared to other procedures, you will still need some time to recover. Most patients can return to their daily routines in as little as a week, but results will vary from person to person. You should also expect some mild bruising and scarring.

Results Take Time
There is a significant amount of swelling post procedure, and it can linger for quite a while. In some cases, it can take as long as a few months in order to see the full extent of your results. If you’re looking for instant results, you will end up disappointed.

It Won’t Change Your Whole Body
With any cosmetic procedure it’s important to have realistic expectations, and this is no exceptions. As we said, this procedure targets small deposits of fat in certain areas. Although removing this fat can give you a tighter, more appealing figure, it won’t completely reshape your physique. Those who are realistic are generally more than satisfied with the results.

As long as you go into it with the right attitude, realizing that it isn’t a miracle surgery for weight loss and that the results need to be maintained, you’ll find that liposuction can produce substantial improvements in your physique.
