Breast Augmentation Basics

Knowing the basics about the procedure helps you to better understand and collaborate with your physician as a team with the common goal in mind of becoming a better you. With that being said, let’s review the basics of breast implant surgery. Breast augmentation is a category of procedures that use Implants or Implants and the patient’s body fat to increase the breast size and shape of your breasts. There are various types and shapes of Implants as well as saline (saltwater solution) or silicone. Both implants are safe, and the choice is based on patient goals and preferences which the doctor will explain and guide you through during the decision-making process at your consultation.

When the breast augmentation procedure begins, general anesthesia is administered to the patient to ensure they are completely asleep during the surgery. An incision is made around the nipple or in the crease under the breast. The new breast implant is then inserted through the incision and placed in one of two locations: above the muscle (sub-glandular) or below the muscle (dual plane). This location will depend upon the specific factors of each patient’s breast augmentation. Finally, after the implant has been placed the incision is closed up and the patient is moved to the recovery room. There should be minimal pain as the breast is still numb from long-duration anesthetic that is applied to the area during the procedure.

Recovery After Surgery

As with any surgical procedure,  recovery time is different for each patient and depends a lot on the size of the implant, bigger implants take more time for the tissue to stretch. The first week of recovery is the most uncomfortable and patients can experience a good deal of swelling and asymmetry. The implants are initially higher on the chest and take several weeks to drop as the muscle and or skin begin to stretch. Patients are asked to perform gentle pushing exercises to help the implant drop in place and so swelling resolves faster. You will be given detailed post-care instructions, and the doctor is always available if you have any concerns or questions about your recovery.

The Added Benefits

Besides the increased breast size that a breast augmentation patient is seeking, there are a series of other benefits our patients are interested in. Breast augmentation is known to improve the breast shape, improve the overall shape of the patient’s figure, and improve self-confidence.
