Breast augmentation – also known as breast implants or, informally, “boob job” – is the process of increasing the size, shape, and firmness of breast tissue. This is typically achieved by use of breast implants, however in some cases fat transfer may accomplish the same desired results.
There are several different options when it comes to breast augmentation, results may vary from person to person.. A discussion with your surgeon will help determine the best option for you. Two of the most popular options are:
There are many benefits of breast augmentation, including:
Breast augmentation patients also experience increased confidence in their general appearance, which benefits their quality of life. Results may vary from person to person.
Prior to surgery, you will be able to “test” different breast sizes using ‘sizers.’ This is an important step, as some patients decide on larger or smaller sizes after being able to “see” their post-procedure appearance.
For the actual procedure, you will first be given either general anesthesia or I.V. sedation. Your surgeon will make a small incision just below your breast. The current breast tissue is then manually lifted, creating a small pocket-like area by which the implant (or transferred fat, should you choose this option) can be inserted. The incisions will then be closed using sutures, skin adhesive, or surgical tape.
Directly following the procedure, you will be taken to a recovery area for recovery and monitoring. During this time, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze. You may also be outfitted with a temporary support bra to minimize swelling.
Most patients are able to return home after an hour of on-site recovery. It takes between five to seven days of home rest before you will be able to resume normal daily and professional activities.
Depending on the size of breast implants, some patients will experience brief trouble maintaining their posture as they become used to their new body enhancement.
Results may vary from person to person.
